Chapter 9
-One month later-
The beeping from the heart monitor filled the hospital suite with its steady high-pitched rhythm. Kae was still unconscious, his body working hard to purge the anesthesia from his surgery. I sat by his side, sipping a cup of hospital coffee, staring blankly at the book in front of me.
I felt lost at that moment. I hadn’t heard from Jacob in a month, and I had no way to find him. I was worried about him and I missed him horribly. I just wish he had given me a chance to explain. I cursed myself for not telling him about Kae sooner, but it wasn’t exactly an easy topic under the circumstances.
I looked over to where Kae slept, shaking my head. It felt wrong to be here, but it would have been wrong not to be present. I had known Kae for nearly twenty years, and for better or worse, he was the person who knew me best.
None of that stopped me from replaying the scene in my head where he turned my life upside down:
I waited for Jacob to return, to turn around once and look at me, but he didn’t. I was standing in the middle of the sidewalk, watching him disappear into the crowd. I waited a while, before finally giving up and heading back to the bakery.
I heard Michaela and Kae arguing upstairs. She was trying to get him to leave, and he was stubbornly refusing, insisting he was still half owner. Danny tried to stop me from going up, but I shrugged him off. My heart hurt and I needed someone to unleash my rage on.
I pounded up the stairs, my fists clenched. Slamming open the door, I looked at Michaela. “Go downstairs and help Danny. I’ve got this.”
She hesitated, and I could see the concern in her dark eyes. She was there for the mess that Kae had left behind, and she didn’t want to see me hurt again.
“If you hurt him,” she said, sticking her finger in Kae’s face, “I’ll show you why I am not allowed at any of the restaurants in town.” She ran her thumb threateningly over the hilt of the kitchen knife sheathed in her belt, her face daring and dark. Michaela was only half Kae’s size but that didn’t make any difference to anything.
With that, she left, giving me a quick hug on her way out and shutting the door behind her. I knew she and Danny would stand vigil at the top of the stairs. Partly out of concern for my wellbeing and partly, truth be told, because they were downright nosey.
I turned to Kae, my rage bubbling over. “How dare you? How fucking dare you?” I hissed, stalking over to him.
“How dare I?” he sputtered, squaring his shoulders.
“Oh no, Kae. You don’t get to be the indignant party here. You are the one who fucked up. You walked out on ME, not the other way around. What the fuck are you doing here?”
Kae ducked his head, a slight cringe on his face.
